Dataworks Internship Programme
At Dataworks we are passionate about providing opportunities for students in our locality to learn and develop. Our internship programme offers invaluable training in a supportive environment. It has helped launch many careers, with a number of our long-term employees first joining us as students.
Josh Crotty a BSc (Hons) Software Systems Development student in SETU, is currently on work placement in Dataworks as a Software Engineer Intern. Below, Josh gives an insight into what encouraged him to apply to the internship programme, the recruitment process and what it’s like to intern at Dataworks.
Why Josh Chose Dataworks
When I was looking for placement last semester, I knew straight away that Dataworks would be high up on my list of preferences. I had heard so much about Dataworks from people who have previously completed placement with them. I really wanted to get real world experience for what I have been studying in college and I knew I would get that with Dataworks. The recruitment and selection process in Dataworks was really straightforward. I was contacted by phone for a quick chat and then I was set up for an interview shortly afterwards. Shortly after I was contacted and offered the job.
An Insight into Interning at Dataworks
The last two months have flown and have been great. Everyone has been so supportive, if they don’t know the answer to something or how to help, they will find someone who can. It’s a really supportive culture which really helps when you are on work placement as you feel comfortable to ask as many questions as you need.
I have been working on an in-house Change Control Management app, WebApp development, Software Development Life Cycle and I have had sull exposure to version control. It is great to get the real work experience to things we have learned in college. I also have an intern training plan which gives me exposure to all the different processes with the company and helps with understanding how the processes link and work together.
Learning Curves
The biggest challenge for me was learning to take my time on projects. I want to be good at things straight away, but I needed to give myself time to learn and understand things properly and use all the support that was available to me. The main positives are getting to exposure to likes of .Net and Angular, which I have never used before but now I am comfortable with
I would highly recommend Dataworks for a work placement opportunity. I would also say to future students to keep your mind open to learning as you will gain experience and exposure to areas you didn’t realise existed. Put your best foot forward but remember that you are there to learn not show off your skills.
