December 03 newsletter

Welcome to the 4th edition of the monthly Dataworks newsletter
This shorter than usual edition of our newsletter most definitely bears all the signs of a Christmas issue. The snow and penguin might have given it away a little but some of the work recently completed by Dataworks for the ESB is also full of festive cheer.

We hope that you have enjoyed all of our issues so far. There has been a lot of truly exciting projects developed here at Dataworks this year and the coming year promises to be a another busy one. So, Happy Christmas everyone from all of us and see you in the new year.

Waterford Regional Hospital chooses Dataworks to develop an Operation Theatre Scheduling System. The system will provide a standardised solution to control all theatre lists maintained within the Waterford Regional Hospital. "This is a critical component to the overall success of a theatre review being currently undertaken by Waterford Regional Hospital" says Peter Roche, IS Manager, WRH. The aim is to provide an up-to-date patient master file for small SQL Server based applications that require access to patient details. Other features of the made-to-measure system include scheduling of patients/procedures, scheduling of theatre sessions & monitoring of actual theatre activity versus scheduled theatre activity.

Dataworks produces the ESB's annual interactive Christmas card
Multimedia is probably the most appropriate word to describe this years Christmas eCard. Material used for this innovative card put together in Macromedia Flash MX include photographs, original paintings & illustrations by artist Ciara Murphy Roosli and a series of children's drawings (winners of this year's ESB kids competition entitled 'The ESB Saved Christmas') and of course Mr Claus himself. This Monty-Pythonesque animation is a layered voyage through Ireland & its seasons finishing in the depth of Winter with the ESB's official corporate printed card signed by Irish artist Tony McDonnell. The whole animation was squeezed into an amazingly small 122kb file, so don't wait any longer and check it out at www.dataworks.ie/esb

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) selects Dataworks to develop a database-driven website for the Forest Vegetation Alternative Management Systems Research Group (FORVAMS). Funded by COFORD (National Council for Forest Research and Development) under the National Development Plan, the site will be administrated by members of FORVAMS using a custom-made content management system. "An extensive library of forest weeds and alternative management systems will be built-up over the years and will provide a unique reference tool for everyone involved in forestry" says Dr Nick Mc Carthy of WIT. Other features such as the forum and news archive will offer a unique networking platform for people working in the industry, along with students and researchers.

No Christmas edition - 'The Leading Edge' technology news will return in January
Until then, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
